Music Education is a valued part of the students well rounded educational development at Costa Catholic Academy.  Many students enjoy playing in the Cadet Band (4th gr.) or Symphonic Band (5th-8th gr.); singing in Jubilee Choir (1st-4th gr) or Singing Friars(5th-8th gr.) ; playing in the String Ensemble (1st-8th gr.) and all students enjoy learning music through dance, singing and performing on barred instruments in general music classes. (3-4yr, preK-8th grade)

At Costa students sing and play sacred music for concerts and for the Mass.  Students deepen their experience and understanding of the Mass by participating in the music liturgy on a regular basis.

I am blessed to be the music teacher/director for so many wonderful children.

2017-2018 Highlights

Costa Music: Prek-5th grade

Costa music students dance, sing, play instruments and create in music class.   This year we are singing our “Glory Bound” theme song throughout the classes and at the end of each school Mass.   The students love this energy-packed song that invites everyone aboard “that glory train”!  Music students are also learning “water” themed songs to tie in with our school-wide STREAM Projects on Water.  Water themed songs include songs from around the world and teach students about the importance of water to different countries and peoples.  PreK and Kindergarten sang “Let’s go to the Sea” song that featured animals in the sea and on the beach that we may encounter.  Other music  classes are singing and performing on drums to  boating or sailing songs of America & Africa.  Of course students get to play the Ocean Drum to our songs, which they love because it sounds just like the ocean waves breaking on the shore. Students in 2nd-4th grades will team up to write their own “water music”.  Mrs. Marsa will guide each class through the composing process and what elements of music a composer must consider when composing.

In February all music classes will sing and dance to Jazz music!  Students will try their hand with the swing beat and improvising to the blues.  Students in March will learn American patriotic and folk songs beginning with the American Revolution and all the way up to present day pop songs. In April students will focus on the great classical pieces by collaborating with our local symphony to learn about famous composers. In May students will learn about their favorite American musicals and how this art form came to be so popular in America.

PreK-5th Grade Christmas Play: The Bethlehem Story

Each year these grades learn a play about the birth of Jesus and perform it in the beautiful Brophy Auditorium at Costa.  The 5th grade class are the actors in the story, backed up by the 4th grade choir. They (5th grade) learn dramatic technique for their parts and even sing and dance in the play!   The younger grades learn Christmas songs and perform them through the play, many of which involve dancing and playing instruments on their classes song.  It is such a wonderful experience for the students and for the parents, grandparents and friends of Costa.

Costa Performing Arts

Our Jubilee Choir (1st-4th grades) and Singing Friars (5th-8th grades) sing for the Mass at Costa and in our Parishes. Our choir motto is:  “We Sing to Serve”.  Costa Choirs sing at local nursing homes and other events in our community. This spring we are learning songs for our annual “Concert on the Church Lawn” that will include music related to our school-wide  STREAM Project: Water!  We are hoping to perform the “Water music” compositions by our 2nd-4th grade general music students.

Costa Cadet Band (4th grade)  & Symphonic Band (5th-8th grades) spend much of the fall learning to march so that they can march in the Veterans and Holiday Parades in Galesburg.

Our Marching Friars Marching Band is for students in 4th-8th grades.  Students love marching in the parades and are proud to represent Costa, support our community, and our Veterans!
